UNION MEMBERSHIP

NEARLY QUARTER MILLION Returns detailing the membership of their organisations as ai December 31, together with the names and addresses and occupations of the officers, trustees and auditors, are required to be supplied by secretaries of unions throughout New Zealand next month for inclusion in the annual report of the Labour Department. It is expected that on account ol' the war the returns for 1939 will have decreased compared with the figures for the previous year, which constituted a record at nearly 250,000.

The total membership of all industrial unions in the Dominion in 1938 was 249.231, which represented an increase of 16,245 on the figures for 1937. The large membership has been caused by the formation of new unions and the application of compulsory unionism to them on the receipt of awards or industrial agreements.
