DRINKS FOR CRICKETERS
The South Australian introduction of a white-coated waiter, instead of twelfth man, to take out drinks to players in Sheffield Shield cricket matches finds no favour .in Melbourne.
Mr,. J. Ryder, former test captain, said that twelfth man should take out drinks. Often 1m was a young player, just coming into first-class cricket. Going on to the field kept him in touch and helped him to become accustomed to the big cricket atmosphere. Otherwise he would be pushed too much into the background. The practice of a waiter serving refreshments on the field is of English origin, and was employed in some of the 1938 tests. During test • ours of Australia, English amateurs, when tilling the role of twelth man, have occasionally been accompanied on the field by an attendant carrying the drinks.
