COAST RAINFALL
NOVEMBER RETURNS SEVERAL BIG TALLIES 6.691 N AT HICKS BAY A large area of the East Coast district between Gisborne and Cape Runaway experienced more rain in November than in the corresponding month last year. However, Rukuhanga station, Cape Runaway, was the exception, a total of 2.78 in of rain being recorded there for 11 wet days, compared with 3.30 in. on 10 days in November, 1938. The heaviest day's rain during the month was l.GGin recorded on November 28. Since January 1 the station gauged 3G.4Bin of rain, just half the tally for the corresponding 11 months in 1938. Much heavier rain fell at a neighbouring station, Matarau, Hicks Bay, which is only a short distance from Rukuhanga. For the 11 rain days Matarau recorded <>.G9in, as against 4.38 in for 13 wet days in November, 1938. A .single day's rain at Matarau yielded 2.7 Gin, or almost as much as Rukuhanga recorded for the whole month. The exceptionally wet day was November 2(i, and the recorder reported that the month was notable for the persistance of northerly and north-easterly winds, with warm and humid conditions. There was much fog and intermittent rain, while shearing operations in the latter half of the month were greatly hindered bv the weather. For the year to date Matarau has experienced jG4.osin of rain, as against 118.61 in for the first 11 months of 1938. A total of G.s6in of rain fell at Pakihiroa station, inland from Ruatoria. during November, the tally being spread over 15 rain days and including a reading of 2.29 in for November 2G. Last year the November total was l.GOin for 11 wet days. Pakihiroa has experienced GB.43in'nf rain so far this year, whereas 134.43 in was gauged in the same period in 1938.
The rainfall experienced at Ruangnrehu, inland from Tokomnru Bay, during the past 11 months presents a remarkably small tally in comparison with the aggregate for the corresponding period in 1938. The total this year was 48.G8in, as against 110.7 in last year. There was a total of 3.92 in for the 11 wet days last month, ‘compared with 1.41 in for 14 rain days in November, 1938. The heaviest fall in one day was 1.03 in, on November 12.
