INQUIRY SOUGHT
MINING CONDITIONS AUSTRALIAN PITS (Reed. Dec. 7, 9.45 a.m .3) CANBERRA, Dec. 6. General unrest in the coalmining industry in Australia wlas alleged yesterday by a deputation of mining unions to the Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, who was asked —on the ground of national emergency—to intervene and appoint a representative com.mu.ttee. Including colliery proprietors, to deal w'ith grievances of the miners and also the enginedrive ity, wUi'ich largely relate to hours of work and anomalies arising out of recent awards.
Alternatively the Prime Minister was asked to appoint a special tribunal to deal with disputes during tlie war.
Mr. Menzies promised to submit- the proposals to the Cabinet and try to furnish a reply by Friday.
