DEBATE IN COMMONS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press A«an. (Reed. Dec. 7, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. (i. Mr. Tom Smith (Lab., Normanton). in the House of Commons, urged the Government to model its old age assistance on the Australian and New Zealand schemes. Mr. A. Jenkins (Lab.. Pontypool) paid a tribute to New Zealand’s old age pensions, which, he said, approximately were 100 per cent higher than Britain’s. Mr. A. A. Somerville (Con., Windsor): Is not that due to financial help from Britain and the fact that standard prices arc given to New Zealand farmers as a result of competition with Britain, for which reason we .are unable to provide better social services? Mr, Jenkins said that the Now Zealand Labour Government established tile new rates and did not adopt the Tory policy of reducing everything after 1931. Consequently, New Zealand was infinitely better oil'.
