REPLY DISAPPOINTING
REQUESTS TO CABINET NATIONAL SERVICE PRODUCTION PROPOSAL (Pftr Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. That the highly-important functions necessary for the proper balance of the maintenance of an armed force and the supply of essential commodities were being in no way jeopardised at this juncture by the absence of a national register or the inauguration of national service is the answer made by the Minister for Manpower, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in a reply to the requests of the Canterbury Progress League. The Government is also of the opinion, the league has been informed, that the time has not arrived ye f for any action on the suggestion thal the 40-liour week should be suspended for the duration of the war. A conference called by the league also recommended the Government to release men from public works for production purposes. The Minister’s reply was received at a meeting of the league last night, members expressing disappointment that no action was being taken' by the Government.
