He was the fifth son of the late Mr. Thomas Bayly, of Waitara. The family took up land in the Toko block, where Mr. Bayly was engaged in farming. Like his brothers, he was a keen Rugby football player and represented Taranaki from 1889 until 1903.

During the Great War Mr. C. Bayly paid his own passage to England, where he joined the Hampshire Yeomanry and went through the Palestine campaign.

On returning to New Zealand after the war Mr. Bayly took up 1800 acres of land in the Bay of Islands district, where he remained until his death. He is survived by his widow and one son and one daughter, Mr. Roger and Miss Nora Bayly.
