APPEAL BY MAYOR

SUPPORT FOR BAND EAST NIGHT’S CONCERT A strong appeal for financial support for the Gisborne Ciiy Band was made by the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., at a concert held in the Majestic Theatre last evening in aid of the instrument fund. The Mayor pointed out that the band turned out at many .public functions and, despite the splendid service rendered to the community, little assistance was given to the musicians. An instrument valued at £55 had been donated by the bandmaster. Lieutenant A. Wood, while the band had paid £46 for the purchase of other instruments and still owed £129. Of the older set of instruments at present in use, each was above 20 years old and some were more than 40 years old. A special feature of the concert was the first appearance of the Junior Band, which gave a pleasing rendering of the hymn, “The Old Hundred,” and the selection, “Water Witch.” The Gisborne City Band also contributed to the programme, ably rendering two marches. Other items were:—Songs, “Little Brown Bird,’’ Mrs. S. Rutherford. "One Day When We Were Young,” Mr. L. B'ignell, “Tales from the Vienna Woods,” Mrs A. C. Coleman and the Misses Coleman (2), and an Irish melody presented by Mr. D. Goldsmith: piano accordion numbers, Mr. H. Patterson; musical monologue, “A Wanderer,” Mr. David Lee; selection, Y.M.C.A. Harmonica Band.
