BENEFIT FROM WAR

GROWTH OF INDUSTRIES INTERIOR OF CHINA (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Provinces in the interior of China have benefited industrially as a result of the conflict with Japan. Wages have risen considerably, but they have been offset by the higher cost of living. These facts were given by Mr. and Mrs. O. Metcalfe, Auckland, who have returned after five years in the West China with the China Inland Mission. Mr. Metcalfe explained- that many wealthy Chinese who have been driven from the coastal areas by the war were supplying the necessary capital for the development of mines and other natural resources. This had resulted in rapid industrialisation of the interior areas.

The demand for labour had meant a rise in wages, but costs were high, partly because of the depreciation of Chinese currency. Actually, tire purchasing power of the Chinese worker was about the same as before.
