1939-40 SEASON OPENING NEXT WEEK ATHLETES PREPARE The Gisborne Sports Club will commence its 1939-40 season with a track meeting on the Victoria Domain on Thursday, December 14. Tire season promises to be a good one. as there arc a large number of athletes in Training. Amongst those who did good work during the week-end wore T. Trengrovc, E. While, V. Davy, P. Cox, the Cameron brothers, M. Lee and H. McLeod. Road training was carried out by a number of .cyclists, including J. and D. Gooch, R. Thomson, G. Tomlinson. R. Lloyd and B. Davis, as well as two new riders who are shaping well. The programme for next week's meeting will be: —Running, Ladies' 50 and 75yds., men’s 50 and 75yds and two laps, schoolgirls' 75yds., and schoolboys’ 75yds. Cycling: Two laps and four laps. In the greyhound section, which is to be run in conjunction with the Gisborne Greyhound Racing and Coursing Club, the events will comprise: Puppy stakes for dogs under 18 months at December 14, maiden, novice, limit, open, novice hurdles and open hurdles events. Nominations will close at noon on December 9 at Mr. C. L. Davy's shop, and nominations must be accompanied by the entry fee for each event. Rules For Dog Owners Greyhound owners must be financial members of the Gisborne Sports Club and the Gisborne Racing and Coursing Club before competing. At the time of nomination the N.C.A. registration certificate number must be given and the certificate .Ciust be produced to the secretary of the coursing club on the ground prior to competing. The last two performances of the dogs must be given when nominating. Several points cups and medals to be won outright during the season have been donated, as follows:—Mr. F. Cox. cup for runners and a medal for cyclist; Mr. T. Trengrove, cup for runners; Mr. Tf. McLeod, cup for runners.
A committee meeting has been called for 7.45 o'clock to-morrow evening at the Selvvn Hall. The sports club will bold a meeting in Palutahi on Boxing Day and the programme will comprise motorcycling, running, cycling and mechanical hare racing. The Te Karaka Sports Club also will be catering for athletes and greyhounds at its meeting on January 1. In the greyhound section dogs should be attracted from many parts of the North Island, for the prize-money is nearly as good as (he Napier meeting, and that club is regarded as the premier greyhoundracing club in New Zealand.
