LINES OF HAPPICOAT
ORELIQ’S PROSPECTS
MENTIONED IN RAILWAY STILL IN HACK CLASS By “Trenton" TJappicoat, surprise two-year-old winner at Auckland, is a filly by Pink Coat from Helen Gold, by Paper Money—Bonny Melon,: sister to Bonny Portland, dam of Reremoona. Lady Benlinck, and Lady Cavendish. She was bred by Miss Edgar Jones, of Geraldine, and was bought by her present owner, Mr. N. R. Souter, of Cambridge, at file last Trent ham sales for IGOgns. Railway Prospect Om* of the most discussed horses of recent weeks has been Orelio. and while he was unable to fulfil his engagements at the recent Auckland meeting, is a three-year-old of whom the best has yet to be seen. A brilliant -beginner, Orelio possesses the necessary attributes of a first-class sprinter, and, fit and well on the day, he would need only to be paraded in the Railway Handicap to command solid support. Orelio is still actually a hack, and his connections may see fit to reserve him for a race like the Queen’s Plate, but should he contest the Railway Handicap he will have prospects.
Young- Paper Money Sires While Inflation and Autopay are the first of the Paper Money stallions to be represented by offering on the turf, there are others who will have progeny racing in coming seasons. Guarantee did a season in the South Island, where Mr. J. M. Samson mated him with seven mares, including the well-bred Anne Shakespeare. Princess Argosy, Privet, and Cleaner, before selling him last January to go to Australia. where he is now stationed, and should receive plenty of opportunities.
Cup Candidate Birthday Boy gained a lot of admirers by his convincing win in the chief event on the second day at Ellerslie, and has now entered discussions as a prospective winner of the Auckland Cup. Since the season commenced Birthday Boy has raced consistently well, and invariably is seen to best advantage in his second attempt at a meeting, indicating that he thrives on racing. No doubt his progress in the interim will evince great interest, but at the present juncture he is one who promises to be a strong contender for the twomile race if all goes well with him.
Nicely Placed Bronwen is a consistent mare with a good record and one who rarely runs a bad race. The determination shown over the concluding stages of her recent victory at Ellerslie is one of her characteristics, and she looks nicely placed in the Railway Handicap with 7.1" Incidentally Bronwen lis related to Llangollen, whose clam was by Marble Arch—Recoup, while Bronwen’s clam is by Lucullus —Recoup. Two-Year-Olds The Dominion’s latest two-year-old winner, Calula Boy, is by Autopay, whose successes include the Thompson Handicap, the Stewards’, the Great Easter, and the Auckland ‘Jockey Club Epsom, Handicaps. Calula Boy, whose success was achieved on the second day at Ellerslie, was having only his second race, and appears to have won very attractively. His dam, Gortyn. is by King Soul l from the King Mark mare Europe. None of Gortyn’s previous produce has gained distinction on the turf. Happicoat, who won the two-year-old handicap on the first clay of the meeting, is by another New Zealandbred sire, Pink Coat (.by Hunting Song).. Helen Gold, dam of Happicoat, is a Paper Money mare of excellent family. Her dam was the Boniform —Helen Portland mare Bonny Helen, a New Zealand Oaks winner. This family has produced some good performers, among them Rcremoana, View Halloo, Lady Cavendish, Lady Bentinck, and Golden Hair. Best of them all was Reremoana, a truly great miler, whose dam Bonny Portland was a sister to Helen Portland. When Happicoat won he narrowly defeated Phaieron, who descends from a famous old Australian family, and is highly rated in the Auckland district." By the Phalaris horse Phaieron Bay, Phaieron is out of Columba, a sister to Eaglet and Mother Superior. They are descendants of the Malster mare Dovelet, who was imported from Australia by Mr. F. Earl, K.C., of Auckland. Eaglet, a very smart mare, was a classic and handicap winner. Another interesting Auckland two-year-old is Cheddington, by Phaieron Bay from Silver Rule, a daughter (by Chief Ruler) of the good mare SilverLink, by Achilles from Secret Link, by Bezonian. Raced by Mr. A. Alexander, Silver Link won numerous good races, including the Auckland Railway Handicap. Silvermine, a brother to Silver Rule, won the Stewards' Handicap.
