ARMED SHIP’S FIGHT
CLASH WITH U-BOAT CAPTAIN AWARDED 0.8. E. (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Dec. 2. Among five recipients of the Order of the British Empire is Captain White, who commanded the Stonepool in the first straight fight in this war between a defensivelv-armed merchant ship and a U-boat. On sighting the U-boat the Stonepool manned her gun in about two minutes and exchanged shot for shot with the enemy with guns of similar calibre at a fair rate of fire. The shooting was good and- the fifteenth shot may well have hit or damaged the U-boat, whose thirteenth or fourteenth shot holed the Stonepool two feet above the water line.
Cap'ain White, by his resolute and skilful action, saved his ship. AbleSeaman Hayter, of the Stonepool, was also awarded the Order of the British Empire, and a report accompanying the issue of the award says that the discipline was excellent and the gun'ayers and the gun's crew did well.
