The Air Ministry announces that a I strong formation of Royal Air Force ; bombers to-day carried out an attack I on German warships in the vicinity of I Heligoland. Direct hits were obtained with heavy bombs. Considerable anti-aircraft fire was met and a Messerschmidt fighter—the only enemy fighter encountered—was shot down. All the British aircraft returned. The Air Ministry has also just announced that several coastal reconnaissance aircraft of the Royal Air Force while on patrol over the North Sea this morning attacked and destroyed with bombs an enemy submarine on the surface. A direct hit was obtained on the base of the conning tower. The Admiralty announced this evening that a number of U-boat prisoners were landed last night at a Scottish port as a result of recent naval operations. It had been reported earlier that three other German submarines had been sunk, two of them by a Grimsby trawler engaged on anti-submarine patrol.
