Quota Not Filled Of the :139 men required as North Auckland’s quota for the second echelon of the special military force, only 25 single men and 19 married men are at present available. There are still about 50 men to go- before ihe medical board. Gas in Coal Mines The deadly effect of even small quantities of cafibon-monoxide gas in coal mines was commented upon Iby Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.'M., chairman of the Royal Commission which is sitting in Huntly to gather evidence upon the deaths of lil men in the Glen Alton mine on September 24. He said that, dependent upon the individual, one part of carbon-mon-oxide in 5000 parts of air might seriously affect a man, 'but that one part in 500 would .prove fatal in the majority of cases. Napier Wool Appraisal In all 23,622 bales of wooL have been displayed in Napier for thie first appraisal there and the job was expected to toe finished on Saturday. The brokers have been working each day, including Sundays, since they commenced in Auckland a fortnight ago, and since their m-rival in Napier the price schedule has been made available, so that they have been working well into the night, also, affixing the prices to their records. The prices of the various grades and classes of wool are being made available almost immediately to the brokers, who then communicate the realisations to the growers concerned.
Kaiti Bach Gutted By Fire
A three-roomed bach at Kaiti Beach owned by Mrs. G. Holmes, McLean street, was gutted by fire soon after 9 p.m. on Saturday. The fire was first noticed by Mr. R. Webb, the occupant of another bach on the beach, and he gave the alarm. The brigade turned out quickly in response to the alarm and soon had the flames under conllrol, but not before the interior of tjhe building Mas badly damaged. The occupiers of the bach were Messrs. Charles Priestley, William McMurray, Donald Cederwall, and Roy Sutton,, Mr. Cederwall was the last in the premises before the fire and at that time everything seemed to be normal and there was no sign of anything that might have caused the fire.
