REGENT THEATRE
MICKEY ROONEY IN “THE HARDYS RIDE HIGH” For complete entertainment theatregoers have been handing it to the Hardy family for seme time now, 'but the sixth of their screen adventures, “The Hardys Ride High" might be claimed as the finest of the senes. It is attracting large audiences in its season at The Regent Theatre. All the old favourites have their usual roles. Lewis Stone is the judge, Sara Haden his wife, Cecilia Parker big sister. Fay Holden the aunt. And then, cf course, there is the most important member of the family, Andy. This is Mickey Rooney’s best "Andy” since the series started. The plot presents the judge as the .possible heir to a 2,000,000-dollar , Detroit estate. The family .gets big ideas, and no one bigger ones than Andy, who imagines himself a millionaire playboy. As such he gets himself into the toils of a glamour girl. Luckily for the Hardys the judge has not. changed, for he discovers later that he is not, in truth, the heir, and .back home go the family, a little chastened, tout happy in their own circle again. It is grand entertainment.
—Wednesday: Cary Grant and Jean Arthur in “Only Angels Have Wings”—
"Only Angels Have Wings,” a thrilling story of an air line which carries on despite continual losses and the perilous uncertainty of the weather, will commence a season at the Regent Theatre on Wednesday. Set against the colourful (background of a sleepy little South American town and be-' neath the frowning grandeur of the lefty Andes, the drama of this struggle for life and a measure of happiness fakes on an unusual force as the interests of a strangely-as Sorted little band of operators clash in unceasing conflict. Cary Grant, who has the main role, takes a part vastly different from the comedy portrayals which have recently gained him so much popularity. He appears as the rough and dynamic pilot in control of the out.post. while Jean Arthur again has a light part as a Broadway showgirl who comes ashore from a visiting steamer to disrupt the peace and calm of the little company with her whimsical charm. Excellent photography of the'! natural -beauties of the region gives a substantial background to the working out of the individual destinies that .provide the dramatic interest. Fine performances are given by all members of the cast, which also includes Thomas Mitchell, Rita Hayworth and Richard Barthelmess.
