PLACED IN SPRINT OLD BILL’S FOOD FORM RAILWAY SCRATCHING MAHAINA WELL BRED By “Trenton” There is sure to be plenty of support for Old Bill the next time he starts over a distance. He was third at Feilding in the Flying Handicap after a slow beginning and on a turning track which did not suit such a bold galloper. He should be in fine trim when the Wellington meeting comes round. Maxam Withdrawn Kaxam was scratched for the Railway Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at 3.20 p.m. on Friday. Well Related Mahina, who gained a place each day at the Feilding meeting, claims relationship to many outstanding gallopers. She is a three-year-old filly by Posterity from that smart galloper Burnish. She is her dam’s first foal. Burnish is by Pombal from Episode, by Limond —Homage. Ringmaster Filly Ringling, winner of the Nursery Handicap at Feilding on Saturday, belongs to the Eulogy family. By Ringmaster, she claims Variable, the dam of Varimond, as her dam. Twoj-y ear-old Form Ten races for two-year-olds have been contested in the Auckland province this season, and success has been very widely distributed, as Nightbeam, who has scored twice, is the only one who has achieved more than one win. Four of the winners, Payette, Lou Rosa, Happicoat and Oalula Boy, were little fancied, and in consequence returned very substantial dividends.
The first winner was Lovaals, who scored in the Avondale Stakes, and it was at the same meeting that Payettu surprised in the Nursery Handicap. Queen City, third and fourth at Avondale, had her turn at Ellerslie in the Welcome Stakes, and at his first start Nightbeam won the Musket Stakes, which he followed with another win at tire Avondale second meeting.
At the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting Lou Rosa, with only one previous etart, won the Tamahere Stakes very easily, to return over half a century, the largest dividend for a two-year-old this season. The Ruakura Stakes, run the second day, was won by the Bullstrained Black Robe, who was beaten into fourth in the faster-run Tamahere Stakes. Phaleron won the Juvenile Handicap on the first day of the second Avondale meeting. Two fresh winners turned up at the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-spring meeting, Happicoat winning the Cambria Handicap and Calula Boy the Rakino Handicap.
An interesting feature of the two-year-old form has been the consistency of Kentucky, who prior to his failure to gain a place in the Rakino Handicap had recorded seven minor placings in as many starts. Nightraid, sire of Nightbeam, and Autopay, sire of Payette and Calula Boy, share the sire honours in the ten races. Other sires represented are Vaals (Lovaals), Foxbridge (Lou Rosa), Phaleron Bay (Phaleron), Iliad (Queen City), Pink Coat (Happicoat), and Leighon (Black Robe). With such a variety of winners, the races for'youngsters at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival, at which several high-class outside horses are likely to be in attendance, should provide a great deal of interest. In addition to those mentioned, several others in the province have attracted attention with minor placings, particularly Grandora and Beau Leon. Two, who have had only one race, in which they were unplaced, Cheddinglon and Marshall Hall are likely improvers. Auckland Classics Two local horses remain in the Auckland classic events after the declaration of first forfeits. Rich Blood and Kindergarten figure in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and the former Is also in the Royal Stakes.
