SINGLE MEN CALLED
AUSTRALIA’S PLAN BALANCED PROGRAMME TAXATION AND LOANS LICENSING OF IMPORTS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn., (Reed. Dec. 1. 2.20 p.tn.) CANBERRA, Dec. 1. Contrary to expectations, no further Commonwealth taxation is proposed during the remainder of the 1939-40 financial year, the Acting-Treasurer, Mr. P. C. Spender, in making this announcement in connection with Iris supplementary financial statement today, said the Government’s policy was to finance the war elfort by a balanced programme of taxation, borrowing from the public and the banks. He estimated the receipts from the revised financial proposals of last September would be £101.490,000 and the expenditure £101,452,000, of which the defence expenditure would be £0,201,400. Mr. Spender said that in 1940-41 iiie Commonwealth Government will impose a comprehensive scheme of war taxation, the details of which will be revealed early next year. The Minister of Customs, Mr. N. J. Lawson, announced that licensing for the importation of goods would begin to-morrow. This had been brought about by a shortage of foreign exchange in non-sterling countries.
SERVICE IN MILITIA AUSTRALIAN UNITS (Reed. Dec. 1. 2.30 p.nn.) SYDNEY, Dec. 1. A proclamation has been issued calling up single men who will be 21 in the year ending June 30, 1940, to serve with the militia. Members of the Second A.1.F., while abroad, will be paid in sterling and the allowances and allotments to dependants in Australia will be paid in Australian money.
This was announced by the Minister for the Army, Mr. G. A. Street.
