MAJESTIC THEATRE ANNA MAY WONG IN “ISLAND OF LOST MEN,” ANI) •“INVISIBLE ENEMY” Dark deeds in a tropic setting are offered in plenty in Paramount’s highly-coloured melodrama, "Island of Lost Men." II introduces J. Carroll Naish in one of his entertaining impersonations: a Eurasian who is the self-styled "king” of a large territory "up the river from Singapore”: a gentleman of extreme suavity and ruthlessness, and with a dictator complex which Mr. Naish conveys with his usual neatness. Fanatically obsessed with his prestige and supremely oblivious of the interest the law is taking in his nefarious existence, the Eurasian has more than a streak of madness, something which help's to make his vanity not only colossal but significant. To his jungle domain he entices the beautiful cabaret singer "China Lily.” She helps in his undoing, for she is really, of course, the daughter of a wealthy Chinese merchant whom the Eurasian has robbed and kidnapped. She herself is in danger of being murdered, like other intruders into the Eurasian's personal affairs, when an uprising engineered by one of the mad ruler’s unwilling band of "lost men, saves her and finally leaves the Eurasian frantically endeavouring to impress his personality on his subjects. It is all very improbable and overelaborated, but entertaining.. Anna May Wong is "China Lily,” and Anthony Quinn her Chinese fiancee and a secret service agent. Eric Blore provides humour and a grim revenge for the killing of a pet monkey. The associate feature, "Invisible Enemy,” is a thrilling spy story. Added attractions are "Popeye Meets Aladdin ai>d His Wonderful Lamp,” in colour, and “The Oregon Trail.”
