RATES OF PAY

AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS CRISIS AT CANBERRA SHOWDOWN COMING BASIC-WAGE DEMAND (Reed. Dec. 2. 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 1. The threat of a premature election and the fate of the Government involved in the dispute over the rates of pay for Australian soldiers will remain in the balance until Tuesday when it is expected that the political crisis which arose on Thursday night will be revived. In the meantime the Government will have the opportunity to consider what compromise, if any, can justifiably be made to meet the demand of the Opposition for “nothing less than the basic wage for soldiers.” The Country Party will also have time to consider whether it will form a common front with the Labour Party and demand a showdown. Sir Earle Page during the debate urged the adoption of the New Zealand rates for soldiers and their dependants.
