SALVAGE OPERATIONS
WAIKOUAITPS CARGO 50 TONS LANDED (Pur Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Approximately 50 tons of the cargo has ibeen salvaged from the Waikouaiti and landed at Bluff last evening. It consisted principally cf Australian wines, a large number of ingots of tin, chests of tea. electrical appliances, cases of Japanese silk goods, and various sundries. It is now reported that the water has found its way into No. 3 hold and that the ship is working badly. The list has increased and the foremast is working ominously. A gentleman of wide engineering experience who visited the ship on Thu rsday afternoon said it was unfortunate that the necessary insurance regulations appeared to have delayed the salvage operations for two whole days, each of which had been ideal for the job.
The weather is cold with a northeast wind this morning, but it is expected that the salvage work will continue to-day. An attempt will be m'ade to work the ship by steam.
