AUCKLAND CUP
PROSPECTS REVIEWED APPEARANCE OF WEIGHTS INTEREST QUICKENS BEAUPARTIR A FANCY By “Trenton” The appearance of the weights for the Auckland Cup and the Railway Handicap will quicken interest in the two big events to be decided at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. The Cup Reviewed Round Up and Catalogue are equal tcpweights in the Cup. The former was narrowly beaten in the event last year when carrying 8.8 by Cheval de Volee, to whom he conceded 221 b. On the third day of the meeting he annexed the A.R.C. Handicap, one mile and a half, with 9.3. He later won the Ohinemuri Cup, one mile and three furlongs, with 9.7, beating Golden Sheila, to whom he was giving 231 b., by a long head. At the Avondale autumn fixture he won the Foley Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 9.13, in the smart time of 2.5. - Round Up has not raced this season and is at present in Australia. Early speculators are not likely to gamble on his return to the Dominion.
Catalogue won the Melbourne Cup last year with 8.4 and with 9.0 this year he met with interference in the race and finished out of the money after winning the Hotham Handicap, one mile and a half, with 9.2, on the first day at Flemington. Last Saturday week he ran second to Maikai in the Williamstown Cup, one mile and a half. Punters will probably want to know something definite concerning his future before considering him seriously. Golden Sheila has been awarded 8.12, or 31b. less than weight for age. She has yet to prove her ability over two miles, but judging by the manner in which she cut down the leaders in the Alison Cup iast Saturday, saddled with the steadier of 9.6, she should see out the extra distance successfully. She has some sterling performances over 10 furlongs to her credit. She won the H. O. Nolan Handicap, one mile and a half, at Ellerslie, with 7.12, beating among others Round Up, who was giving her 291 b., while with 8.12 she was third in the Foley Memorial at Avondale and was beaten by a head by Jayola in the Autumn Handicap on the second day, when carrying 9.0. These were both mile and a quarter events. This season she won the Spring Handicap, of similar distance, at Ellerslie last month and was third in the Waikato Cup, one mile and three furlongs, with 9.0, while on the second day of the meeting she won the Hamilton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 9.1. beating among others Cheval de Volee (8.6). Al Ellerslie on Saturday last she- accounted for the Alison Cup, one mile and a quarter, with 9.6, when conceding Flood Tide 51b., Royevrus 141 b., and Birthday Boy and Balinavar 151 b. Now she has to give Flood Tide 91b., Royevrus and' Birthday Boy 161 b., and Balinavar 191 b.
Beaupartir has not been harshly treated with B.l'l. Last year he was second to Defaulter in both Derbies and he won both St. Legers with Defaulter out of the way'. One of his best efforts, however, was in winning the Easter Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie last April with 8.8, while he beat a good field in the Awapuni Gold Cup, one mile and a quarter. In the Harcourt Cup, run over that distance in October at Trentham, Beaupartir was narrowly beaten by Beaulivro, while he was second to Royal Chief in the Canterbury Cup, one mile and a half, at Riccarton and was fourth ir. the Metropolitan Handicap, run over the same ground, when carrying 9.2. With 31b. less than weight for age he should be one of the early fancies. Flood Tide (8.3) failed when tried in the Auckland* Cup in 1936 with 8.11, but on the third day of the meeting accounted for the A.R.C. Handicap, one mile and a half, with 9.1. He had previously won the Mitchelson Cup. run over the latter distance, on the same course. He won the Jellicoe Handicap, one mile, last season, while this season he has been placed twice in his only three starts —the last being a third in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, one mile and a qua Her, at Ellerslie last Monday. King Rey, Sly Fox and Llangollen have 8.1. Sly Fox beat King Rey in the Plumptori Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale, in September, being in receipt of 61b. This horse has raced consistently this season. King Rey subsequently ran third in the Poland Cup, one mile and three furlongs, at Paeroa with 9.5 and filled a similar position in the President's Handicap, nine furlongs, to Black Musk and Birthday Boy, when giving the latter 271 b. Llangollen has proved herself up to a mile and three furlongs and looks as though she could go further. Melbourne Cup Winner Wotan (8.0) accounted for the Melbourne Cup in 1936, but has not done much since. However, he is said to be working well.
Yours Truly (7.11) won the New Zealand Cup earlier in the month
with 7.1. Itjs stated that he is to be shipped to Sydney this week, and it is unlikely that he will fulfil his engagement. Royevrus and Birthday Boy have each 7.10. The former accounted for the Mitchelson Cup, one mile and a half, at Ellerslie with 7.10, beating Birthday Boy, to whom he was conceding 31b., with Sly Fox (9.2) third, with Golden Sheila (8.9) was unplaced The next day, over a mile and a quarter, Golden Sheila (8.8) gave Royevrus 21b., Birthday Boy 101 b., while she way in receipt of 91b. from Sly Fox. Golden Sheila won, with Royevrus second, Sly Fox third and Birthday Boy fourth. In the Alison Cup Royevrus, when giving Birthday Boy lib., finished second and Birthday Boy fourth, but on Monday in the St. Andrew’s Handicap Birthday Boy won with 8.5, while Royevrus was unplaced with 8.10. Both are nicely treated in the Auckland Cup. Cheval de Voice and Old Bill have each 7.9. The former won the last Auckland Cup with the minimum and would only need to be in the same form again to take some beating. Old Bill’s best performance this season was in winning the Wainui Handicap, one mile, at Trentham last month. He may not go to Ellerslie. Thermidor (7.8) failed in the last New Zealand Cup, while Balinavar (7.7) has raced well up to a mile and three furlongs this season, being in the money on several occasions. Dictate (7.5) was third in the last Auckland Cup with lib. more and occupied a similar position in the New Zealand Cup last month with his present impost. lie will have to be respected. Of the others. Hot Box (7.1), The Cardinal (7.1) and The Wrecker (7.0), who finished close up in the New Zealand Cup, look (he best Fancies are sure lo take a wide range at this stage, but the following may appeal:— BEAUPARTIR, GOLDEN SHEILA, LLANGOLLEN, SLY FOX, FLOOD TIDE.
