Married Women Workers
Sir,—ln answer to “Fair Play,” what answer has she to tlic.se facts’ A friend of mine, a married woman, had a job offered her but she has a small boy also. She managed to procure a girl of 15 who has since secured a position in a local shop. She then approached the usual channel ior help and was told that it was a hopeless position as the local department stores were urgently in need of girls and these were just not to be had. Also' imagine what it would be like if “Fair Play" was the manager of a miscellaneous store of any description. A young girl who did not know tlie stock and where things were kept would be more nuisance Ilian she was worth, and would be a worry to the other hands with her questions, not to mention the time wasted in inquiries.
To-day another instance came to my knowledge. A girl was offered a position by the Social Security Department to do light housework at 10s a week, but her mother refused to allow her to accept this, saying siie could very well stay at home and help her and still collect the IDs a week from flic Government. Why was not the social security 10s stopped when the girl refused honest work and the chance of being a help to some harassed mother? This girl improbably loafing at home quite pleased with the 10s pocket money the Government pays her and which the working married woman is helping to nay to keep her in idleness. WORKING MARRIED WOMAN.
