HOTEL BAR MIX-UP
NAZI SALUTE RESENTED NEW ARMY RECRUITS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The giving of a Nazi salute, accompanied by a verbal “heil. Hitler.” to three young men celebrating their enlistment resulted late yesterday afternoon in what the police described as a “nasty mix-up” in the bar of a hotel in the city. As a sequel Nelson McKnight, aged 36, a plumber, to-day was charged in the Police Court with behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Pender said he learned that McKnight was struck by one of the men. A nasty mix-up followed. McKnight said he had spoken in fun and wanted the men to have a drink with him.
The Magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien. said that McKnight had not demanded to be assaulted. One of the mep, who had enlisted, might have put him out of the bar.
Sub-Inspector Pender: I think he deserved what he got. The others got mixed up in the trouble and the situation got a bit nasty. McKnight was put out of the bar. Mr. Levien: Did you not tell me that before. McKnight was fined £1 10s.
