Indefatigable General

The death oC General Sir Tom Bridges, which was reported by cablegram this week from London, recalls an incident during ' the retreat from Mons in the last war. When his men. exhausted, refused to to move, General Bridges, with his drummer, purchased a toy drum and tin whistle from an adjacent toyshop and the pair marched round a fountain in the village playing “Tipperary” and the "British Grenadiers.” The action was effective, and the men fell in and even supplemented the “band” with two mouth-organs. They finally allowed themselves to be led back “to their regiment and refused to permit, General Bridges to relinquish leadership of the “band.”
