DEVOID OF TRUTH

GERMAN CANARD CLAIM TO CRUISER SUBMARINE STORY “SINKING” OF TANKER VESSEL REACHES PORT (Elcu Tel. Copyright—United Fres,s Assn.) (Reed. Nov. 30, noon.) LONDON. Nov. 29. Nothing is known in informed circles in London of a German claim broadcast last night that a U-boat sank a British cruiser of the London class of the East Shetlands. Germany claims that the U-boat commander, Captain Prien, who sank the Royal Oak, torpedoed the cruiser. No details were given.

The Admiralty announcement in reply to the German claim was brief. It stated: “The German claim is devoid of truth.”

An Oslo report states that the coastguard of Stadtland Island saw a battle to-day between warships and bombers just outside territorial water and heavy gunfire further south.

A broadcast yesterday from Germany stated that the British tanker James John Maguire, was sunk last week off the English east coast, but the Admiralty is still silent about the alleged loss. As already stated in the British press, this tanker, of 10,325 tons, was not sunk, but was successfully brought to port for repair. The steamer Rubislaw laden with cement struck a mine off a southeast coastal port and sank in two minutes. Thirteen members of the crew are dead.
