NO FIGHTERS MET ! GERMAN TALE DENIED I CROSSING OF HOLLAND (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) (British Official Wireless.J Reed. 11.30 a.m, RUGBY, Nov. 29. It can now be stated that the Royal Air Force long-range patrols which raided Dorkum reached the objective with 29 minutes to spare before complete darkness. The defence was taken by surprise and the leading section attacked three seaplanes which could be seen on the slipways. Ma-chine-guns on the roofs of the hangars and pompom guns opened fire on them and ships also began firing.
The Royal Air Force planes then turned their machine-guns on the seaplanes and the machine-gun posts on the roofs, and pompoms and then made off. No enemy fighters came up to engage them and no aircraft were observed on the return flight.
A German radio broadcast declares that low-flying British battle planes attempted to raid the German seaplane base at Borkum Island. The attackers used machine-guns, but were repulsed. No bombs were dropped.
In response to German statements to the contrary the British Air Ministry declares: “All our machines returned safely from the Royal Air Force night reconnaissance of the north-west of Germany on Monday. There .is no truth whatever in the German allegation that our aircraft crossed Holland. The Royal Air Force met adverse weather, electrical storms and ice conditions. However the operation was successfully concluded.’’
