WAI -O- MAT ATI NI D 1 SPLAY PUPILS CONGRATULATED LIST OF AWARDS (Herald Correspondent.) A perfect day and a large attendance of parents and visitors favoured the Wai-o-matatini School’s annual calf and pet lambs club’s parade, which was held in the school grounds last Friday. In conjunction with the parade, a display of home-grown vegetables and flowers was held .in the school-room. The floral arrangements were very artistic. A delightful luncheon was served in Maori fashion before the judging commenced. The entries in all sections were exceptionally large and of good quality. 32 calves and 13 lambs being paraded. The judge was Mr. C. H. Cooper, Gisborne, who congratulated the children on the fine type and splendid condition of the animals. He said that they were very well handled, and compared very favourably with any on the Coast or elsewhere. He gave the children some valuable hints on calf management, and urged them to keep up their good work. He also congratulated Mr. McKay, the headmaster, Miss McKay, and their stall', 'Misses M. Nga-t-a and M. Tamahori, on the efficient manner in which they had organised the function. Mr. C. G. Calvert, school agricultural instructor, who judged the flowers and vegetables, also spoke in glowing terms of the fine display of exhibits. The judges and visitors were entertained with delightful Maori action songs, led by Miss M. Ngata. At the conclusion Mr. McKay thanked Messrs Cooper and Calvert for their comprehensive talks. Call Club Books—Hiria Wawatai. 1: Cissie Tangaere. 2: Arlie Tako. 3. TE KARAKA PARADE JUDGING COMPETITION (Her,ild Correspondent.) The annual calf club day at the Te Karaka District High School was held in the school grounds under ideal weather conditions on Tuesday, when a large attendance of parents and friends assembled to see the youthful stock breeders parade their charges.
Mr. F. R. Bould. Gisborne, judged the animals displayed for general condition and fitness as dairy types, and also judged the youthful competitors from the point of view of handling and treatment of the animals. Mr. C. G. Calvert, agricultural instructor to the schools of the district, was also present, and in a short address, drew the attention of the parents and friends to the central calf club parade to be held in the Poverty Bay A. and P. showgrounds on December 13.
The programme for the afternoon was opened by a parade of the calves and lambs, followed by the judging. Mr. Bould gave a demonstration of judging as a guide to' the competitors. This was followed by a pupils’ judging competition, each child being required to allot points an an animal selected by the judge.
A pleasant afternoon concluded with refreshments, during which the headmaster, Mr. R. N. Grono, thanked all those who assisted to make the gathering so successful.
Mr. F. Hobbs, on behalf of the parents and friends, replied, thanking the staff of the school, and ail who had assisted for so pleasant an. opportunity of seeing such an important branch of the school work. Certificates of Merit. —Kenneth Hobbs, Keith O'Connell and John Cudd. Judging Competition Calves. —Kenneth Tuapawa, 1; Robert Wills, 2; Norric Mills, 3. At the conclusion of the parade, the certificates were presented to the successful competitors by the chairman of the school committee, Mr. Charles Mills, who spoke of the’value of the calf club movement, and encouraged the children to continue with their efforts next year,
