BRITISH WAR OUTPUT

HEAVY INDUSTRIES STEEL AND IRON RISE WASTE ELIMINATED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1.20 p.m. RUGBY. Nov. 23. Developments in the organisation of industry during the oast 20 years have greatly facilitated its adaotitude to war conditions. A notable example is the .British iron and steel industry. In the last war a great expenditure of money and oi'tort was involved in bringing former uneconomic units into operation to obtain the maximum output. Fiio waste thus entailed has now been eliminated as a result of the operations of the British Iron and Steel Federation. A leading figure in the industry points out that the steel industry is now capable of producing at least 33 per cent more tonnage yearly than in 1917. • The improvement is particularly striking in the case of basic steel, the average annual production of which over the period 1933 to 1938 increased by 121 ner cent compared with 1913 to 1918. A comparison of the pig-iron production in the same periods shows an increase of s(i per cent.
