FIRE IN COLLIERY

MAKO MINE WORKINGS

OLD SECTION SEALED

(Por Press Association.) WHANGAREI, tills day.

A fire believed to be due to spontaneous combustion has resulted in the sealing of the old workings of the Mako coal mine. Tiie workings were driven 40 to 00 years ago but were abandoned in 1893 and left idle till two years ago, when a new comoany was constituted.

.01 85 men on the payroll, only 17 are actually employed on the old workings. If the men are prepared to work a dog watch, making three shifts, it is believed that the present output can be maintained from the newer workings. It is believed that the fire is not extensive and that the old workings may be reopened after Christmas.
