SHOTS FIRED AT SEA
A WHALING EPISODE DURBAN EXCITEMENT DURBAN, Oct. 20. Shots fired by a vessel at sea caused considerable stir in Durban recently. A Durban whaler, the Egeland, was returning to harbour with two dead whales in tow. Off the coast one whale broke loose. It was difficult to manoeuvre rapidly in the chase of the drifting whale with one whale already fixed alongside, so the crew manned the harpoon gun. One shot missed, or failed to hold in the carcase, but a second succeeded, and the errant catch was taken under control again. By that time, however, the entire port was buzzing with excitement. The garrison had been called out and gunners stood to. Every searchlight was turned on and the sea swept for the cause of the gunfire ,in the dark. The patrol vessel Koodoo, under navy command, was sent out to inquire from the whaler what the trouble was, but it took some time for matters to quieten down.
