| SERVICE ON COUNCIL

CHAIRMAN’S RECORD | WAIKOHU COUNTY WORKS (Special to the Herald.) TE KA'RAKA, this day. | At the commencement of business at the monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council, held in Te Karaka i to-day, the clerk, Mr. J. G. Appleton, I informed the council that 25 years had i elapsed since Cr. A. A. Fraser had i been elected to that body, and that ! the chairman had completed a quarter | of a century of continuous member- | ship. Cr. Fraser was elected in November, | 1914, and in 1929 became chairman in J succession to the late Mr. T. B. Spence He has continued to 'hold that office in i the intervening years.

-His colleagues extended io Cr. Fraser their warm congratulations upon his record, the expressions of goodwill being endorsed on behalf of the county staff.

The council voted its condolence to the relatives of the late Mr. J. B. Clark, who served for three years as representative of the Motu riding between 1914 and 1917. The chairman remarked upon the good work done for the council by Mr. Clark during the early years of county administration. The opinion of Mr. F. M. Martin, counsel to the New Zealand Counties’ Association, on the question of heavy traffic fees on farmers’ vehicles was received. Tarndale Accident Sequel Mr. Gordon Gregory wrote saying that he would make no charge for the use of his lorry in bringing down the men injured in the accident on the Tarndale road on November 3. —The council expressed appreciation of Mr. Gregory’s generosity, and of his prompt assistance at the time of the accident.

A letter was received from the secretary of the Te Karaka Emergency Precautions Committee asking the council to guarantee expenditure incurred by the committee in dealing with an emergency.—The request was agreed to, and it was decided to ask the Minister of Internal Affairs to indemnify the council.

Mr. W, M. Jenkins, secretary of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council, wrote stating that the council has been appointed a controlling committee for patriotic purposes in the Waikohu County with power to appoint authorised collectors. —The letter was received.

The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board acknowledged the council’s application for permission to raise a loan of £ 1200. The chief postmaster, Gisborne, advised that the department would meet half the cost of tar sealing the footpath in front of the. departmental section in the Matawai township.—The letter was received Native Rates Composition The registrar of the Native Land Court wrote asking whether the council would accept a compromise for payment of the rates on part of Manukawhitiidtiki block. —It was pointed out that in respect of this block, a compromise had been effected three years ago. The council was prepared to make some concession for prompt payment of the outstanding rates. Copies of the lease of portion of the railway reserve at Te Karaka were forwarded by the Railway Department for completion.—The lease was sealed by the councik The following authorities were received: —Main Highways Board: Lavenham road detour, £77 11s 9d (£1 for £1); grading and sealing, Whatatutu, £l3O Is (£3 for £1). Public Works Department: Wharekopae road ,£323 4s 8d (£2 for £1). Accounts amounting to £2681 4s Id were passed for payment. One tender was received for the building of gravity walls to protect the road along the bank of the Wharekopae River, where subsidence has occurred. This tender being much in excess of the estimate of ‘ the engineer, Mr. A. G. Lucas, it was declined, and the engineer was directed to have the work done by day labour. Two tenders for metalling on the Mangamaia road were also above the estimate, and likewise were declined, arrangements for having the work done being left to the engineer. Those present at the meeting were Crs. A. A. Fraser, chairman, H. H. Dods, H. C. Boys, H. J. F. Tombleson, :«I. Doyle, C. Gaukrodger, and J. B. Williams.
