BIG-GAME HUNT
AUCKLAND SPORTSMEN COLUMBIA VISITED Fine trophies of numerous types were secured by Mr. E. J. Schofield and his son, Mr. J. C. Schofield, of Auckland, during a recent big-game shooting expedition lasting seven and a-half weeks in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. They returned on Saturday, but the numerous heads obtained will arrive by a later steamer.
Describing the expedition as most successful and occasionally exciting, Mr. Schofield, sen., said they had begun in the Coutenay district and had gone right through to the Caribou district, on the big bend of the Columbia River. Their trophies comprised two bull moose, two wapiti or elk, a grizzly bear, a black bear, a bighorned mountain sheep, four Rocky Mountain goats, and two mule deer stags. The mountain sheep was an excellent specimen.
Much of the success of the expedition was due to the excellent organisation by the Game Commissioner of British Columbia, Mr. Schofield said. He paid a tribute to the manner in which hunting was conducted in Canada. The protection of game, forests and other natural assets was almost a religion with the people.
