DRIFTING MINES

BRITISH ADMIRALTY CONFIDENCE EXPRESSED CALL FOR DRIFTERS IMMEDIATE RESPONSE (Klee. Ttd. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. noon. RUGBY, Nov. 27. To meet the mine-laying offensive on the part of the enemy, which was not unexpected, the Admiralty is rapidly reinforcing the mine-sweeping flotillas by the acquisition of fishing vessels of trawler and drifter types and has called for volunteers from among fishermen between the ages of 18 and 45 years with not less than one year’s experience of deep-sea fishing craft.

Recently the Admiralty asked for 200 drifters for mine-sweeping, and it is now revealed that more than 200 volunteers have already been received.

“We have the matter well in hand. You may be assured that the magnetic mines will not be a menace much longer," said an Admiralty spokesman to-day in referring to the tremendous response to the appeal for 200 drifters and trawlers especially to combat the new form of marine warfare, which was Obviously, he said, a German effort to choke neutrals from British routes.
