Tikiwhata Tunnel

Sir, —The turmellers at Tikiwhata are to be congratulated on the progtess made since Mr. Semple’s visit a year ago. Your article of November

24 tells us that about 83f chains of this tunnel are now excavated against 34 chains 12 months ago. The progress for tlie year is thus just over four chains a month as compared with 2.2 chains monthly for five months prior to Mr. Semple’s visit in November. 1938. Mr. Semple estimated then that five chains a month should be exctvated so that the year’s progress Shows a chain a month under his estimate. There arc still G 5 chains of tunnel to build which should not be impossible to do in another year if the luck holds good.— FANGSCREW.
