TOLL CONTINUES
SHIPS SENT DOWN MINES AND U-BOATS GREEK A VICTIM BRITISH AND FRENCH (Reed. Nov. 24, 12 noon) LONDON, Nov. 23. The Greek steamer Elena R, loaded with grain Cor Antwerp, was sunk oil the south coast, it is believed by a mine. A lifeboat summoned by rockets rescued 24 persons, including a woman.
The steamer Geraldus, formerly the Candleslone Castle, was sunk off the cast coast. The crew are safe.
The trawler Sulby was sunk by a U-boat off the Scottish coast. Five of the crew, including the skipper, are missing.
An unnamed French trawler was sunk off the* south-east coast. It is feared that nine of the crew of 10 were drowned.
The steamer Darino was sunk by a U-boat on Sunday. Sixteen of the crew are missing. Eleven spent three days aboard the U-boat before being transferred to an Italian ship.
