SUSPENDED FOR WAR

RHODES SCCHOLARSHIPS CONDITIONS OF TENURE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON; this day. An outline of the regulations approved by the Rhodes trustees regarding the tenure scholarships for the duration of the war, was received at a meeting of the Rhodes Scholarships Selection Committee. The trustees agreed that, though elections may be held in 1939 for the academic year 1940-41, scholarships shall, after the election, be suspended until after the war. Nevertheless, in special cases the scholar-elect will be allowed to make application to proceed to Oxford without delay. Where a student is taking ordinary academic work in non-scientific subjects, permission is unlikely to be given. In the case of a medical student or scholar interested in scientific research likely to be of national value, approval is possible. Permission will be granted only in the most exceptional cases where the scholar is from a country in which conscription or compulsory training is introduced.

In a case where a scholar is, for a special personal reason, disqualified for war service, the trustees will consider the application. The trustees hope when peace is restored to revive all the suspended scholarships, but they do not wish definitely to bind themselves to do so until that time has arrived. The trustees further reserve the right to cancel a suspended scholarship. Despite the usual rule that a scholar-elect may not marry before taking up his scholarship, the trustees will not insist that marriage automatically involves the forfeit of the scholarship, but will be prepared to consider an application in regard to special cases.
