RETURNED HER PAY

LONDON, Oct. 20. Mrs. Elaine Herbert, wife of the Bishop of Blackburn, (Lancs.), and daughter of Lord Bolton, who was given £2 a week for A.R.P. ambulance driving, said yesterday: “1 sent the money back to the borough treasurer as soon as I received it. Nothing would induce me to accept money from my town at a time like this. “I volunteered last year, and hadn’t the slightest idea there was pay for it. I hope they will find me work that is purely voluntary.”
