CARROLL PORTRAIT
GALLERY PRESENTATION
NEXT WEEK’S FUNCTION GATHERING OF NOTABLES The presentation of the portrait of the late Sir James Carroll, K.C.M.G., M.L.C., to the National Art Gallery has been arranged by the Gisborne committee, which organised the collection of funds and the commissioning of the painting, for next week.
The presentation will be made by Sir Apirana Ngata, on behalf of subscribers to the fund and friends of the late Timi Kara. The function will take place on November 29, at 2.15 p.m., at the Dominion Museum, in the Maori house there which has an ancient connection with the district which Sir James Carroll represented in the House of Representatives for so many years.
Contemporaries of Sir James Carroll in politics and in social and sporting activities have been invited to attend the presentation ceremony, which should be the occasion of a notable gathering of men formerly prominent in the political life of the Dominion. Political parties of the present day will be repx-esented by their leaders, it is expected.
The portrait, which was exhibited in Gisborne recently, will be handed to Mr. T. C. A. Hislbp, Mayor of Wellington, one of the National Gallery trustees, and will be hung in an appropriate position among other paintings of notable public figures in New Zealand’s history.-
