RAIN IN CANTERBURY
BENEFIT TO CROPS WHEAT AREAS SAVED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Steady rain fell in Canterbury all day yesterday becoming heavier in the evening. It was greatly needed by city gardeners. In some large market gardens the planting of tomatoes outside had been later than for 20 years, the severe winter, late frosts and long dry spell having all contributed to delay crops in Canterbury. The wheat districts also benefited considerably and in. some areas the rain is said to have saved wheat from a position which, a week or so ago, appeared hopeless. In North Canterbury, however, oats and crops have failed and arc beyond reviving in few districts and it is feared that a bad winter next vear will tell heavily on stock.
