SUCCESS IN ENGLAND SINGING FOR TROOPS A young Dunedin baritone, Mr. Denis Dowling, who l'or the past four years has been studying at the Royal College of Music, has completed his studies and is at present fulfilling engagements with the 8.8. C. and with Harold Holt’s concert parties, which are providing entertainments for soldiers. Before leaving college, Mr. Dowling received the Tagore Medal, which is awarded ' annually to the outstanding pupil of the year, tin's being the first occasion for nearly 40 years that the award lias been won by a vocalist. At the beginning of September Mr. Dowling was engaged for the season by the Sadler Weils Opera to play Fainifal in “Dor Rosenka.valicr,” a part which lie understudied last year, but on account of the outbreak of war, the festival was abandoned and a great opportunity for an auspicious beginning to his oroffesional career was lost. He later joined up as a stretcher bearer with the air raid precautions section and sent his name forward for enlistment.
