LOCK-UP ESCAPE
THREE YOUTHS GONE INCIDENT AT OPOTIKI SMALL CAR MISSING Three youths awaiting removal to Auckland on remand escaped during the night from the police lock-up in Opotiki, according to advice received by Inspector G. B. Edwards this morning. The loss of a small car from a garage near Opotiki is believed to be connected with the disappearance of the youths. One of the three young men is Raymond George Shepherd, who pleaded guilty in Opotiki on Friday to the conversion of a car at Onehunga, and also with entering the premises of the Farmers’ Trading Company, Ltd., at Opotiki and stealing chocolates and fruit. The other two boys appeared in the Children's Court, and whereas the older lad was committed to the Supreme Court in Auckland for sentence, they were remanded to the Children’s Court in Auckland on charges of car conversion and theft. The car now missing from Opotiki, and which it is thought the youths may have used to get clear of the district, is a green baby machine, with black mudguards, and numbered 142,891. Roads leading out of Opotiki are being watched for signs of the young escapees. I
