Advice that his son, Mr. Geoffrey Julian, had been appointed second in command of a minesweeper stationed at Scapa Flow was received by Mr. T. G. Julian, of Auckland, this week. Mr. Julian obtained a commission in the British Navy three years ago, and was appointed to H.M.S. Bramble. His recent! appointment to a mine-sweeper was made after the outbreak of war. Twenty-eight years old, Mr. Julian was trained at the Auckland naval base.
Mr. L. J. Plank, headmaster of College Street School, Palmerston North, will retire on superannuation at the end of the year. Mr. Plank has been nearly 43 years in the service of the Education Department, and formerly was well known in this district, where he was first assistant at Gisborne Central for some years, and subsequently held a suburban headmastership. He was keenly interested in sport, and particularly in Rugby football, bis services to the game including a long period of activity as referee.
i There was a gathering yesterday afternoon of members of the Wainui Surf Life-Saving Club for the presentation of a razor to Mr. J. R. Beckett, a past secretary of the club, who is to be married to-mor-row afternoon to Miss J. Blair. The presentation was made by the club 1 captain, Mr. S. W. Bruce, who referred to the excellent work that had been carried out -by Mr. Beckett since the start of activities. On behalf of the members, he extended their best wishes. These remarks were endorsed by Mr. D. F. Muir, and the congratulations of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club were voiced by Mr. T. S. Wauchop. The recipient replied in a suitable manner.
