THREAT TO BUSINESS
LETTER TO CLIENTS WELLINGTON FIRM PLEA FOR UNITED ACTION Following the lead of the managing director of an Auckland firm of hardware merchants which circularised 3000 of its storekeeper customers pointing out that the Government’s import restrictions were wrecking its 50 years’ established business and affecting the employment of more than 100 workers, the principal of a Wellington firm, which directly represents in New Zealand a large Birmingham industry, has prepared a letter for general distribution to clients. Addressed to “Mr. Shopkeeper,” the letter states:—
“It will possibly be your turn next, because every day it is the turn of someone. Hundreds of importers and manufacturers are threatened with complete closure—many have already done so—with consequent loss of livelihood and dismissal of staffs. This is through no fault of principals or staff.
“Business men, and their employees, who have worked hard for many years to build up business connections and who have played a big part in contributing to the national income by'the payment of millions in customs duty, sales tax and general charges relating to importations, are being forced to close up.
“Again, it may be your turn next. You, too, live on what you sell and if you have no goods to offer how will you continue in business? What are you doing to safeguard yourself? The Government and the trade unions have always preached that ‘unity is strength.’ This advice should be heeded by all affected by the import restrictions and prohibitions. They must all unite and protect by every fair means available the common right to live and conduct legitimate business unfettered by harsh and unjust restriction.
“Do not fear to make your experience known to the public. Let the public see what is happening. Let employees and public alike know what will result from empty shelves. Prepare yourselves to restrain the avalanche of Government control which threatens to wipe you out.’'
