WAIROA ATHLETES MAYOR OPENS SEASON GISBORNE CYCLIST WINS (Special lo tliu Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “Amateur athletics is one of the things that go a long way towards building up a nation,” stated the Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. 11. L. Ilarker. when ollicially declaring the Wairoa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's 1939-40 season open at Lambton Square on Wednesday evening.
The Mayor expressed pleasure at seeing such a good attendance on the opening night, and mentioned the absence of the Rev. C. E. Hyde, the first president of the club, who was at present in camp at Trentham. Although absent from the district, added the Mayor, he felt sure that Mr. Ilyde would follow the activities of the club "during the coming season with interest.
