BRITISH SHIP SUNK

PORTUGUESE WATERS

ARMED GERMAN RAIDER

(Reed. Nov. 17, 1.40 p.m.) CAPETOWN, Nov. 10. A German raider, believed to be a 10,000-ton armed merchantman, sank the 454-ton British ship Africa Shell, inside Portuguese territorial waters, 180 miles north-east of Lourenco Marques. The Navy Office confirms the sinking of the Africa Shell which apparently occurred on Wednesday as a civil pilot flying over the area, saw the ship sinking and the lifeboats on a nearby beach. Other reports say the crew were allowed to land in lifeboats at Inhambane, but the captain was taken prisoner. Persistent rumours that the raider was a “pocket” battleship are authoritatively denied. All shipping has been warned.
