8000 FT TUNNEL
| WAIKAREMOANA PLAN j POWER DEVELOPMENT ! SUPPLANTING RACE 1 CO-OPERATIVE CONTRACT j (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. Tile Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has arranged for the construction of a tunnel 3000 ft. long in connection with the Waikaremoana hydro-electric development scheme or. the lower level. The work is being done by co-opera- j tive contract. The tunnel will be 12ft. !in diameter with a concrete lining | reinforced where necessary. This is I one of the biggest constructional jobs I associated with the further expansion I of electrical output from Waikat o-j mo ana. The decision to construct the tun- j nel, stated Mr. Semple, was made ini preference to cutting a long water j race on the hillsides as the silting j problem will be overcome.
