CUP AND SPRINT

WAIKATO MEETING REVIEW OF PROSPECTS FORM OF RUNNERS SLY FOX CONSISTENT By “Trenton” Excellent fields are expected to line up to contest the Waikato Cup and the Cambridge Handicap at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Sly Fox, at the top of the handicaps with 9.2 in the Cup, must be respected, as ho has been very consistent. He was third in the Mitchelson Cup over a mile and a half, with the same weight, and was also third in the Spring Handicap on the second day with 9.3, after getting none the best of the start. He was also placed at Trentham.

Taurangi won at Stratford and should be a better horse now, as he needed the race. Hot Box will need to improve a lot on Avondale form to have a chance.

Royevrus is still at a handy position in the weights, but it must be remembered that he now only receives 91b. from Sly Fox, whereas he was in receipt of 201 b. when he beat Sly Fox in the Mitchelson Cup. Ned Cuttle can hardly bo considered on recent displays. However, Birthday Boy and Balinavar were first and second respectively at Avondale and the former may benefit more from the race. Entail may be tile best of those near the minimum.

The following may find favour at present: Sly Fox, Birthday Boy, Taurangi and Royevrus.

Cambridge Handicap A win at Avondale has placed Orate at the top of the Cambridge Handicap, but even with 9.11 lie should go well. Llangollen was third on the second day of the Avondale meeting, while Suleiman races very well fresh. The latter has 9.9. but it must be remembered that he scored at Trentham last season with 9.6 in lmin. 12sec. Farland will be at home on Te Rapa, where most, of his wins have been scored. He has been out of a place at his last two attempts.

Royal Bachelor is racing well and would need only to repeat his Avondale form to be in the firing line. Pirate King was second to Orate at Paeroa and is clue for a win, and Our Jean is a smart sprinter with three successes to her credit this season.

Val Lu was unlucky at the Auckland meeting and won' over a mile on the concluding day. Valimeen is a good sprinter and recorded the best gallop of the morning at Takanini on Monday, taking 1.1 for five.

Race Call was a winner at Bulls and has raced consistently this term. Olympus and Orwere appeal among the lower weights.

Some that may find favour at this stage are Our Jean, Val Lu, Suleiman and Race Call.
