GROWING VEGETABLES
INVERCARGILL EFFORTS VARIATION OF AWARD The progress made in the growing of produce on city reserves was the subject of a report submitted by the superintendent of reserves, Mi'. B. P. Mansfield, to the Invercargill City Council.
“Although the work has been considerably advanced during the period much remains to be done before it can be claimed that the project will be carried through to a successful conclusion,’’ stated the report. “With the aid of all the mechanical devices at the disposal of the men working to capacity, ground has been brought in rapidly and worked up satisfactorily. All areas prepared to date are planted with potatoes.
“Another area now being prepared, will be sown with swede turnips. Carrots will not be sown this season.’’
Advice was received from the Industrial Emergcnucy Council of the Department of Labour that it had no objection to the agreement made between the council and the men employed on the work for the variation of the industrial award to enable the men to work in shifts.
