INCENDIARY FIRE

DISCOVERY BY POLICE When patrolling the Petone esplanade early on Sunday morning '.two constables observed smoke issuing from a refreshment stall. The fire was fortunately in the incipient stage and was soon extinguished by the Petone Volunteer Fire Brigade. An inspection revealed that a doorhad been burst open and a small bundle of cotton waste saturated with kerosene and partly burnt had been placed in position. The building is owned by the Petone Borough Council and is leased to a firm of ice-cream manufacturers. There was nothing in the building except an ice-chest, tables and chairs. During the past few months there have been at least three incendiary lires in the district, but the damage lias been small.
