MINE TRAGEDY

FALL OF DEBRIS ONE BODY REMOVED SECOND DEATH FEARED EFFORTS AT RESCUE TWO MEN ESCAPE (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, this day. A tragedy occurred in the Westport Coal Company’s Millerton mine yesterday when a fall of debris occurred in an old dip which was being prepared for the resumption of working.

Four men were working there. J. Young escaped with slight injuries, but Joseph Hopkinson, Robert Brownlie and John Blake were trapped. Mr. Blake was later discovered pinned up by timber against a wall and suffering from shock, but both Messrs Brownlie and Hopkinson were covered by debris with no hope of their recovery alive.

Miners worked in relays to remove the fall, which was apparently a very heavy one.

Mr. Hopkinson, an old servant, of the company and deputy in charge, was a married man of about 60 years of age with four married daughters and one single, and one son.

Mr. Brownlie was married, over 60 years of age, with one married daughter and one son.

Mr. Blake is a single man

At a late hour last night the body of Mr. Brownlie was recovered.
